MEET THE COMMUNITY - CHRISTINA SCHINDLER

Celebrating the passion and purpose behind our people.

At Elmwood, leadership means more than guiding students through academics—it’s about cultivating a culture where every child is empowered to grow, explore, and thrive. Since joining Elmwood, Middle and Senior School Principal Christina Schindler has brought a warm, collaborative spirit and deep commitment to connection. With a focus on student voice, purpose-driven learning, and building meaningful relationships, Ms. Schindler is helping ensure that every student feels lifted, valued, and unstoppable—both in and beyond the classroom.

How does your work contribute to making our community feel lifted and unstoppable?
Since joining Elmwood, I have focused on building relationships and fostering connections with students, parents, teachers, and our wider community. These relationships are central to how this school helps each member of the community feel lifted and unstoppable by being seen and valued.

Can you share a moment when you saw Elmwood students shine?
While Elmwood students shine in what they say and do every day, one specific way I see our students stand out is when they work to overcome an obstacle. Rising to meet a challenge, inside or outside the classroom, involves great courage, risk-taking, and a true enthusiasm for growth. I am continually inspired by the accomplishments our students demonstrate in learning, leadership, the arts, and athletics.

What’s something new you’ve learned this year?
This year, I’ve learned so much about my new school and a new city. Moving to Ottawa has been a wonderful experience that encouraged my family and me to explore new places, build new connections, and embrace the vibrant community that surrounds Elmwood. From discovering local gems to meeting passionate families, this move has deepened our sense of belonging.

What is your favourite thing about the Elmwood community?
Elmwood’s sense of connection is what I value most. Not every school has such a clear and authentic identity, and even fewer use it to guide how they teach and lead. Here, students are empowered to be themselves, to grow with purpose, and to find joy in being truly seen and supported.

What advice would you give to a student who wants to pursue your field?
Teaching is one of the most impactful careers you can choose. Educators shape future leaders and change-makers, and leadership in education is both meaningful and rewarding—especially when it centers student success in every decision.

What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
My family includes many generations of teachers, dating back to the 1700s in the Shetland Islands, where our family home was called Schooltown.

What’s a word or phrase you say often?
Yet. It reminds me that learning is a lifelong journey—we’re always growing, even if we haven’t mastered something yet.
