At Elmwood, we believe that who you are matters just as much as what you know and that learning how to lead with integrity, empathy, and intention is truly what makes us lifted and unstoppable.
An Elmwood education is not just about acquiring skills and knowledge. It is equally about becoming the kind of person who can contribute meaningfully to a better world. That is why this year we have introduced monthly themes in Homeroom and Assembly that bring our school values to life. These themes encourage us to reflect on the kind of learning environment we want to create and the kind of people we aspire to be. They also remind us to act with intention and purpose, fostering a common language around personal growth and social-emotional development.
In September, our theme was “Caring & Belonging”. In October, our theme was “The Power of Inclusion”. November’s focus is “Respect, Responsibility & Accountability”.
These three interconnected traits help build a culture of trust, kindness, and integrity—cornerstones of our Elmwood community.
Respect is about valuing others and treating them with kindness. It creates a positive environment where everyone feels heard and included, leading to stronger friendships and more effective teamwork. Examples of respect in action:
- Listening attentively when others are speaking, whether in class or in conversation
- Approaching different viewpoints with curiosity and open-mindedness
- Using kind and thoughtful language—saying "please" and "thank you"
- Thinking before speaking: Is what I am about to say kind, necessary, and helpful?
Responsibility means doing the right thing—even when no one is watching. It involves making good choices, being dependable, and following through on commitments. Examples of responsibility include:
- Keeping shared spaces clean and ready for others
- Making decisions that support your learning—like getting enough rest
- Catching up after missing a class or assessment
- Arriving to class on time and fully prepared
Accountability is about owning your actions and learning from them. Mistakes are a natural part of growth, and at Elmwood, we believe in creating space to take risks, try again, and grow with confidence. Examples of accountability include:
- Acknowledging when a mistake has been made and taking steps to make it right
- Accepting the consequences of your choices with honesty
- Reflecting on challenges as learning opportunities
Together, these themes remind us that academic excellence must be rooted in strong character and helps each of us—students and staff alike—see how daily actions and decisions contribute to a larger culture of care and courage.
Stay tuned for December’s theme!
