MEET THE COMMUNITY - NATASHA JOSSELYN

Tell us about your role and what you like most about it.
I teach Grade 6 Drama, and Grades 8 through 10 English. I love connecting with my students and providing them with the support they need to do their best learning and be their best selves. They brighten my day each and every day. They’re constantly surprising me, making me smile and making me laugh. Our students are so thoughtful, kind and intellectually curious. We have such great conversations. I truly love my students and the positive learning environments we create in the classroom together.

What is your favourite thing about Elmwood?
My favourite thing about Elmwood is that our students are open-minded and eager to learn and that our staff, faculty and management all care so deeply about our students and each other.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received, and from whom?
Self-care, self-care, self-care! If you don’t care for yourself and advocate for your needs, there will not be enough of you to give any of yourself to any endeavour, nor any of the people in your life. This has come to me through a variety of sources, from my yoga teacher trainer, Rachael Brathen, to the facilitator for the mental health first aid course a group of us took through Elmwood last year.

If you could choose one superpower to have, what would it be? How would you best use it?
I would love to have endless supplies of energy so that I could take on all the different projects and activities that interest me and that I think would be beneficial to both myself and others.

Which word or phrase do you use most often?
I say, “Exactly!” a little too often, because my students read my mind on a regular basis, and my favourite word is ‘serendipitous’ because I like the idea of happy coincidences, where it feels like things worked out the way they did for a reason.

What is one thing that would surprise people about you?
I have a bachelor of fine arts in dance. OR I’m a certified yoga instructor. OR I can pop up into a handstand and do the worm out of it!

What is your favourite extravagance?
The super-rich and creamy Icelandic yogurt at Nu grocery store!

What is your favourite way to treat yourself?
Nordik Spa is absolutely my favourite way to treat myself and probably my favourite place on earth!

What has impressed you most about the start of this year?
I have been really impressed by the positive and supportive attitudes of my colleagues and students. The beginning of the school year is always really busy, but we have an enthusiastic bunch, equipped with can-do attitudes.
