MEET THE COMMUNITY: NADINE KILBERTUS

Tell us about your new role and what you are most excited about.

This year I have the pleasure of taking on the role of Middle School Grade Team Lead. My role is to support students on their journey through the middle years. By doing so I also support the collaborative work of the teachers in each grade team to ensure that each student has every opportunity to reach their full potential.

What I am most excited about in this role is being able to work more closely with the students and my peers, but also in creating memorable experiences in Middle School.

What experience (work or otherwise) has best prepared you for this role?

Ever since I can remember, I have been involved with children and working with a team; as a camp counselor, swim instructor and babysitter. Throughout my teaching career I have been a leader; as a Homeroom Teacher, the Middle School Athletic Director as well a coach of numerous sports teams in all divisions. These roles have given me the skills needed to manage and work together with my fellow colleagues, but also to organize and run school events.

What is your favourite thing about Elmwood?

My favorite thing about Elmwood is the community and the array of experiences. Over the years I have formed many special relationships. I have also embarked on some amazing adventures and had some incredible opportunities for professional growth.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received, and from whom?

The best piece of advice that comes to mind is something that I’m sure many have heard either from a parent, teacher, or coach: “If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again”. Growing up, my mother always seemed to use cliché phrases to teach me lessons. This one, in particular, applies to every aspect of life and I find myself passing it onto my students and now onto my own children.

If you could choose one superpower to have, what would it be? How would you best use it?

Having the ability to freeze time would be my superpower. I find that there is never enough time in the day to fit in everything I want to accomplish.

Which word or phrase do you use most often?

“No worries!” or “Okay?” according to my students.

What is one thing that would surprise people about you?

That I used to be very involved with music as a pianist, guitarist and singer.

What is your favourite extravagance?

My favourite extravagance is shoes. “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world” ~ Marilyn Monroe

What is your favourite way to treat yourself?

A spa day!

What has impressed you most about the start of this year?

The excitement and positive energy from the students!
