Ivan Sambles, Mathematics Teacher and Grade 9/10 Team Lead.

Tell us about your new role and what you are most excited about?

The new role, gives me a fresh new challenge as I move on from Athletic Director and I am looking forward to supporting the students across all aspects of Elmwood life. Within this I hope to be able to open doors and opportunities for them to try new things, become risk takers, ask questions and develop into the leaders of tomorrow within the amazing and safe environment that Elmwood provides.

What experience (work or otherwise) has best prepared you for this role?
Throughout my career I have been strong advocate for pastoral and whole school education rather than just academics. This has constantly led me to look for co-curricular opportunities and leadership roles to support students in their endeavours. This has included being a Head of Year (Grade Team Lead in the UK) and a boarding house master.

What is your favourite thing about Elmwood?
Community, I love the way we support, encourage, develop and grow together. It enables us all to try new things, to ask inquisitive questions and to grow deep connections with each other.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received, and from whom?
Do not be afraid to ask: Not sure who said it though…. You might not get the answer you want, but you could well get an answer that helps you.

If you could choose one superpower to have, what would it be? How would you best use it?
Teleportation: Not a big fan of wasting time in travelling for holidays and jet lag.

Which word or phrase do you use most often?
Any questions??

What is one thing that would surprise people about you?
I hate peanut butter, just the smell puts me off.

What is your favourite extravagance?
Golf, does that count? I don’t really splurge on a lot of things, but when I do it is usually lots or golf or a nice bottle of Scotch.

What is your favourite way to treat yourself?
Playing sport or Cadbury’s Dairy Milk from the UK.

What has impressed you most about the start of this year?
How normal everything feels so quickly and the students adaptability under all circumstances.
