MEET THE COMMUNITY - FRANCES MARCHAND

Tell us about your role and what you like most about it.
I am the Director Health, Safety and Wellness, Nurse/Counsellor at Elmwood. What I like most about the role is the personal connection and ability to approach each student and family as individuals. To create a plan of care that best supports each individual’s needs and to make a difference in supporting the student in their journey to reach their full potential.

What is your favourite thing about Elmwood?
Watching how Elmwood is so much more than a school for students. It becomes a huge part of their lives and provides them with many opportunities to grow as individuals in a safe and challenging environment.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received, and from whom?
From a group of grade 8 students: “Adults and parents ask too many questions. If adults want us to talk then stop asking questions.”

The second best is that sometimes “adults can make things worse”.  Knowing that I always stop, think about my actions and involve the students in the plan.

If you could choose one superpower to have, what would it be? How would you best use it?
I would like to possess a magic wand which when waved would take away people's suffering.

Which word or phrase do you use most often?
There's no problem we can't deal with together.

What is one thing that would surprise people about you?
Some would be surprised to know that I have worked at Elmwood for 24 years and was the Duke of Edinburgh Leader for over 10 years. As well, over this time have been in contact with approximately 8400 students.

What is your favourite extravagance?
Nespresso coffee... this was a Covid purchase and treat.

What is your favourite way to treat yourself?
To go for a run and run and run and run…...

What has impressed you most about the start of this year?
How positive the students are and how easily they adapt to change.
