MEET THE COMMUNITY - EVELYN PIKE

Tell us about your role and what you like most about it.
I am the music/drama teacher for Junior School, and I get to teach every single student here, even the Pre-Ks! What I love about my job is the variety of activities I can do with my students to help them learn about and love music. We have so much fun together, especially getting ready for performances. I also love seeing the progression through the grades as students become more confident singers and musicians. The really cool thing is then seeing some of my former JS students when I teach them in Grade 8 Humanities!

What is your favourite thing about Elmwood?
The positive vibe that I feel when I walk into Junior School every morning. The cohesive, mutually supportive staff and the students' exuberance as they greet one another and enter into each new day.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received, and from whom?
Whenever I am faced with a new and challenging venture (which in my case often involves technology), I remember my dear mum saying: it’s always easier not to do it. In other words, be brave and try it!

If you could choose one superpower to have, what would it be? How would you best use it?
I would love to wave my magic wand and make covid disappear so I can do full-blown musicals again!

Which word or phrase do you use most often?
I often use the word “enunciate” because it’s so important when singing in groups, especially now with masks on!

What is your favourite extravagance?
Going on European adventures with my college friends.

What has impressed you most about the start of this year?
I love how flexible everyone has become… we do things differently, but the joy and commitment to learning are still there.
