MEET THE COMMUNITY - ERICA EADES

Tell us about your role and what you like most about it?
I currently work as the Librarian and Literacy Specialist in Elmwood’s Junior School. I feel so lucky to be in this role because I get to help students fall in love with reading. There’s nothing better than seeing a reluctant reader discover the magic of books!

What is your favourite thing about Elmwood?
There’s a real sense of civic-mindedness that runs throughout the school. Our students genuinely care about their community and are always looking for ways to make the world a better place.

If you could choose one superpower to have, what would it be?  How would you best use it?
It’s not technically a superpower, but I would love to be able to speed-read. There are so many books I’d like to read and not enough hours in the day!

What is one thing that would surprise people about you?
Because I’m relatively quiet, people are always surprised to learn that I once dreamed of becoming a journalist. I have a minor in journalism studies and spent several years working for my campus newspaper. A highlight from that time was getting to interview Canadian artists such as Tegan and Sara, the Sheepdogs, and Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy.

What is your favourite way to treat yourself?
Spending time in nature -- whether that’s going for a hike, kayaking, or just walking around my neighbourhood.

What has impressed you most about the start of this year?
Our students have just been so optimistic and excited to learn. The resilience they’ve shown these past few months has been inspiring.
