MEET THE COMMUNITY - CHANEL BOURDEAU

Tell us about your role and what you like most about it.
I am a Junior School French teacher. I teach French to the grade 1 girls, Ms. Wiegand’s grade 2 class, the Core grade 3 class and the Extended grade 4 and grade 5 class. What I like most about my role is seeing the girls’ progress and committing to their learning. I try to make the learning fun, but they also make teaching them fun because they ask excellent questions, they participate actively, they work hard, and they teach me new things each and every single day.

What is your favourite thing about Elmwood?
There are so many things about Elmwood that I absolutely love. I look forward to coming to work every day to be at Elmwood. That said, my favourite thing about Elmwood has to be our community.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received, and from whom?
Mrs. Blackadar has taught us about the power of ‘yet’. Adding the word ‘yet’ to a sentence has been very empowering and has made me realize that many things are still within reach and that it is in my power to continue working towards success. I caught myself using this small powerful word just this week. I was telling the students in my classes that I love learning about other languages, and that some of the girls have been teaching me some words in their mother tongues when we are outside for recess. I told them that some of these words were hard for me to pronounce and that I was not very good at it YET! I hope they will continue to try teaching me.

Which word or phrase do you use most often?
Oh la la!
