CAMP ELMWOOD REFLECTIONS

Written by Hailey Kay '23, Fry House Head

Starting the year with Camp Elmwood has been a longstanding tradition at our school. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the camp has not run for the last two years so this year’s trip was extra special and much anticipated. Grade 12 students were last at camp in Grade 9, but through their leadership, they kept the Camp Elmwood traditions alive and well, helping all who attended make lasting memories and strengthen the bonds within the Elmwood student community.

The graduating class arrived at camp one day early giving them the perfect opportunity to get reacquainted after the summer holidays as they worked together to plan events for the arriving students. The first day included a thrilling high ropes course and a lot of team building as everyone worked to organize the opening ceremonies, spirit regatta, campfire, and closing ceremonies.

The next day was very exciting as the rest of the campers arrived by bus and were assigned to their cabins and Grade 12 leader. Their arrival was followed by fun homeroom activities including anything from an ecology hike to stand-up paddle boarding! Camp Wanakita provided delicious meals, and students were treated to unique camp songs organized by welcoming staff.

The following day began with “Hobby Hubs” where students could sign up for their activity of choice. Run by both Elmwood and Wanakita staff, options included rock climbing, canoeing, swimming, and more. Later in the afternoon, the spirit regatta, led by Grade 12s, pitted the various houses against each other in a fun-filled competition in which students could show off their house spirit and pride. House cheers were belted out while students participated in activities like “fill the canoe” and “drip, drip, drop.” A house dinner was later held, followed by an indoor campfire where students in each grade presented skits and songs.

The final day at camp started with the famous “polar bear dip”, where students were up early to run into the chilly lake water. Later, students would travel back to Ottawa with amazing memories of a sweet return to camp!
