By James Whitehouse, Head of School
Elmwood’s Board of Governors is responsible for supporting our school’s strategic vision, providing school oversight, and ensuring our current and long-term financial well-being. The Board is a crucial strategic driver of Elmwood School, ensuring the leadership and direction of the school are aligned with the very highest of standards. The governors comprise leaders who are parents, past parents and alumni and who volunteer their time and expertise to support our school. We are extremely grateful for all that they give and do for us. Their thoughtful and expert guidance is a key to our success.
The Board Chair provides an especially important role, lending support and leadership to the Head of School and guiding the Board in its role. Mr. Peter Hudson, an Elmwood parent since 2007 and proud father of Lauren Jane in Grade 12, has been Chair of the Elmwood Board of Governors for over six years. Peter has generously devoted his time, resources and significant skills to helping Elmwood through many strategic changes and challenges, including guiding the school through a change of Head of school and the global pandemic. His devotion to Elmwood is unwavering, and his philanthropic leadership has taken the school to new heights. He has been inspirational, inclusive, and, above all, keenly focused on what is best for the girls in the school. Over my time in the role, he has been a mentor and provided strategic support whenever I needed, at all times, ensuring I am focused on what best serves our community. He leaves the position of Chair with a Board that, under his stewardship, is stronger than ever and poised to tackle the exciting future that awaits the school. As a community builder and successful business leader, his time is valuable, and I could not be more grateful for his leadership and support over the years as Chair and Board Member. As Past Chair, Peter has kindly agreed to continue to serve on the Board and support the school.
As we move forward, I am delighted to announce Ms. Jacqueline Palumbo-Sugunasiri as the new Chair of Elmwood’s Board of Governors, following unanimous support at our recent Annual General Meeting. Jacqueline is the proud mother of Bianca, a student of Elmwood since JK, now in Grade 11. Jacqueline is a long-serving member of our Board of Governors, joining the Board in 2014 and serving as Chair of the Governance Committee. She is Senior General Counsel and Head of Treaty Negotiations at the Department of Justice of Canada. In this role, she manages the negotiation of all international agreements between Canada and its foreign partners in the areas of mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and extradition and appears before the Canadian courts on behalf of the Attorney General of Canada in these areas of law. After working closely with Jacqueline over the years, I am personally very excited to be starting this new chapter with her leading our Board and supporting my Leadership of the school.
