One of our key objectives this year is to strengthen our connections; connections between alumnae and current students, amongst Old Girls across the country and around the world, and between our alumnae and the school. Strong connections between these key groups help ensure that our school and our girls benefit from a committed, informed and supportive network.
Our first endeavour of this school year was a reunion of Old Girls in Toronto on November 20th. Twenty-five recent graduates from 2005 to 2019 joined Mr. Whitehouse and Ms. Moffat at the Art Gallery Ontario for an evening of engaging conversation and reminiscing. It was the perfect way to connect our recent graduates with those who are more established in the city, to introduce Mr. Whitehouse as the new Head of School, as well as to share the school’s recent successes and our visions for the future.
Making connections between Old Girls and current students has helped one Grade 10 girls, in her MYP Personal Project, a major research project for the year. Lucia, who hopes to pursue a career in medicine, wanted to meet with a cardiologist to ask questions related to their work and work-shadow them for a day. Thanks to our growing alumnae network, we were able to connect Lucia with Dr. Habibat Garuba ’03, a cardiologist at The Ottawa Hospital. Lucia and Dr. Garuba are in touch and are in the process of coordinating calendars to schedule a visit to the Cardiology Department. Connections like these have great potential in helping current students narrow down their course of study, offer internship opportunities, and prepare for successful careers.
Over the past few months, we have welcomed many Old Girls back to the school as attendees at events, for tours of our renovated spaces, or reunions with faculty and staff. Our doors are open to any and all alumnae who want to come to visit and catch up with their former teachers and see what has changed since they walked the halls of Elmwood.
Our ability to make these valuable connections is dependent on the strength of our network, and so it is our priority to build our database of alumnae. We encourage all Old Girls to e-mail the Advancement Office and share their contact information, as well as their news!
Keep an eye on our website and social media pages for announcements of more Old Girl reunions to come, as well as new mentorship opportunities at the school. James Whitehouse will be hosting a small gathering in London (UK) at the end of January. If you are in London, please e-mail email@example.com to confirm your attendance. Stay tuned for details.
