As a member of the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS), Elmwood School undergoes a rigorous set of external inspections in order to ensure we meet or exceed established standards across a wide variety of metrics. One of the requirements that the CAIS standards ask for is a comprehensive volunteer policy for our community.
Most of our volunteers do not have regular or direct one-on-one contact with students. We refer to these volunteers as Level 1 volunteers. Prior to the start of their first volunteer activity, they are required to complete a Volunteer Offence Declaration Form, to be completed online when they apply to be a volunteer through the tab below. For subsequent school years, the form is to completed annually, at the beginning of the school year or when the volunteer opportunity arises.
For volunteer situations which might involve regular and/or direct contact with students which the Head of School deems to have limited teacher supervision parameters (eg. one-on-one), a Level 3 Vulnerable Sector Check is required. Some examples of activities requiring this include working in the Uniform Shop, assisting with coaching or working with Elmwood Theatre productions. The Vulnerable Sector Check is required prior to the start of the volunteer activity. For subsequent school years, these volunteers need to complete the Volunteer Offence Declaration Form on an annual basis, at the beginning of the school year.
As a volunteer there is a cost to obtain your Police Vulnerable Sector Check. In order to receive a reduced cost, you will require a letter from Elmwood School stating that you are a volunteer. Please email jwlodarczyk@elmwood.ca to receive a pdf letter that you can attach to your application. The cost will be reimbursed by Elmwood School. Please provide a copy of the payment receipt to jwlodarczyk@elmwood.ca.
If you have any questions about our process or our Volunteer Policy please contact Janet Wlodarczyk, Director of Finance and Administration at 613.749.6761 extension 223 or by email.
