At Elmwood, we’re looking for motivated and enthusiastic girls who will contribute positively to the life of the school through their motivation, intellectual curiosity and willingness to try new things. In turn, we inspire each girl to reach her full potential, motivate her to succeed and prepare her for university and beyond.
Discovering Elmwood is an exciting process. Our Admissions team is dedicated to helping you learn what makes Elmwood the right fit for your daughter and family, guiding you through our admission process, and answering all your questions along the way.
For students considering admissions for September 2017, a portion of our scholarship fund is still available. Please click here for more information.
We invite you to make a visit to our campus for a private tour—you can see the school, the students and teachers, and meet with key members of our team. Please contact our Director of Admissions, Elise Aylen at email@example.com or (613) 744-7783 to schedule a tour or to ask any questions you may have.
THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS: STEP-BY-STEP
Selecting a school for your daughter is one of the most important decisions you will make as a parent and a school visit is an essential part of that process. Information sessions are held a few times every year, but you can book a private tour anytime. During the tour, which typically takes about an hour, our Director of Admissions will not only give you a tour of the school’s facilities but also talk about the school’s history and our mission and vision.
There are also opportunities for your daughter to become better acquainted with the school. During a Taster Morning your daughter is paired with a current Elmwood girl for the morning so she can experience a regular morning of programming. Our Friends Friday events are opportunities for our youngest girls to experience our Early Years program.
Complete our online application form and submit your application fee of $150.
Information you will need to complete the application:
- recent photograph (wallet-size)
- latest report card and transcript from current school
- copy of birth certificate
- copy of passport and Citizenship Status
- copy of Immunization Record
- Applicant’s Profile
- Certification of English language ability (if applicable)
Applications for financial aid and scholarships can also be completed at this time. A portion of our scholarship fund has been reserved for students applying between November 2016 and April 1, 2017.
Within two weeks of submitting your application, we will contact you to set up an interview. In the interview, we will review your application and have a chance to ask and answer any questions. You and your daughter will also have the opportunity to meet other key members of the team and discuss the next steps. Interviews typically take approximately 1 hour.
Academic assessment varies and depending on the time of year and age of student, they are either written entrance examinations or in-class assessments conducted by the teacher.
Each girls’ application, interview and assessment is considered by the Admissions Committee. Successful applicants will receive a Letter of Acceptance along with an enrolment contract. The signed enrolment contact along with the non-refundable enrolment fee secures your daughter’s spot for the upcoming academic year.

Elmwood is an independent, not-for-profit school. Our sole purpose is to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students. That means that all tuition goes directly to the operating budget of the school. Our educational program is also supplemented by fundraising, such as the Annual Campaign, the Elmwood Gala and Elmwood Parents’ Association initiatives.
Elmwood offers two tuition payment plans:
Payment Option 1: 4 equal payments in March, June, August and January
Payment Option 2: 11 equal payments from March to January
In addition, Elmwood offers Tuition Refund Insurance that gives parents the opportunity to insure fees in the event of student withdrawal or dismissal, provided the student has attended more than 14 consecutive calendar days commencing with the student’s first class day of attendance in the academic year. For more information, contact Tanja Mackin, Director of Finance and Administration.
There are also a few additional annual fees (technology program and/or uniform, for example).

At Elmwood, we want to attract the best and brightest girls and open the Elmwood experience to deserving candidates. Offering merit-based scholarships as well as needs-based financial aid insures that we meet this goal. This is made possible through generous donations from the Elmwood community.
Elmwood is committed to attracting exceptional girls with unique qualities through our scholarship program. We realize, however, that identifying talent isn’t a simple process. That’s why we’ve designed our scholarship process to allow us to get to know our candidates, learn about their current achievements, and help us assess their potential for future academic success and how they might contribute to school life.
We welcome outstanding girls to apply to our scholarship program by filling out the application form. All applicants will then participate in an interview with the Director of Admissions and may be asked to participate in a second interview with the Headmistress (and/or another member of Elmwood’s Scholarship Committee). Applicants will also be required to write the Elmwood Entrance Exam.

Margaret White Scholarship
Margaret White was the Headmistress of Elmwood School from 1982 to 1990. In her memory, her family generously endowed an annual scholarship to be awarded to a deserving student that exemplifies the Elmwood spirit.
Each year the Margaret White High School Entrance Scholarship is awarded to a promising student entering Grade 9 who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership, and extra-curricular and community involvement. The scholarship has a value of $5,000 per year for four years.
Along with completing the application form linked above, students must submit a financial aid application through Apple Financial.
We believe that one of the main things that makes Elmwood such a great place to learn and grow is the diverse makeup of our community. That’s why we’re dedicated to reaching out to exceptional students from diverse backgrounds. Financial aid allows us to offer the advantages of an Elmwood education to girls who show promise, regardless of their family’s economic situation.
Parents are encouraged to apply for a bursary at the same time as a child’s application for admission is submitted to the school. Bursaries are awarded according to need (not scholastic or other special gifts), but successful applicants must satisfy the school’s entry requirements and work to capacity while at the school. Financial Aid may be combined with a scholarship.
Elmwood’s financial aid decisions are administered by a third party: Apple Financial Services. To apply for financial aid, contact Elise Aylen to receive a waiver code in order to complete the process at no charge. Once you have your code, please fill out this questionnaire. It is used to determine to whom an offer of a bursary would be most beneficial.
Please contact our Director of Admissions, Elise Aylen, for more information.
Elmwood welcomes international students into our community every year. With strong representation from Ottawa’s diplomatic community along with students attracted by our world-class International Baccalaureate curriculum, our student body represents over 30 different countries from around the world. We’re proud to have such a diverse community that offers students a truly global perspective.
Elmwood’s Homestay Program provides the opportunity for students to study and grow at Elmwood while living with a local family, sharing meals in the household, and taking part in family life.
As a homestay student, Elmwood girls will get an unparalleled cultural experience. Along with taking part in family life and students being provided with a certain degree of independence and responsibility, students whose first language isn’t English will be immersed in the language, helping them improve their language skills very quickly.
Friendships forged between our visa students and their host families can be long lasting and rich with possibilities for future travel and cultural exchange.
