Elmwood students from Grade 6 to 10 explore and discover the world around them during the five years of the IB Middle Years Programme. They experience an enriched curriculum dedicated to broadening their horizons, and to developing well-rounded people. As such, they learn to ask the right questions, think critically and become lifelong learners, capable of facing rigorous academic demands, both in and out of the classroom.
The IBMYP focuses on all aspects of the student’s development—academic, social, artistic and physical. The programme is crowned in Grade 10 by the Personal Project, a challenging and rewarding process that requires high levels of creativity and critical thinking. Guided by a mentor, the girls took up the challenge and have produced an incredible variety of interesting projects this year: a novel about occupied Holland based on a grandparent’s experiences; a mystery novel utilizing the science of cloning; a cultural cookbook that explores the connection between food, family and history; a cooking website that provides quick, easy, yet healthy recipes targeted at university students; a business plan for an e-business; a proposal for the use of green space as an outdoor exercise facility; and a free trade vs. fair trade website encouraging people to think about their consumer choices. For students who found a passion, the Personal Project truly was a labour of love.

This week Elmwood proudly sends its Slalom Snowboarding team to the OFSAA provincial championship finals. Paige Tremblay goes into the competition as the top ranked girl representing Ottawa, and the Elmwood team is ranked third. They will travel to Mansfield, Ontario to race on Thursday, March 1. The girls started their dryland training in November and are very excited that all of their hard work is paying off. This year, Cassandra Smith, a professional snowboard racing coach worked with the girls for several sessions. As a team, they have really improved their riding this year, and each girl has already exceeded the goals she set at the beginning of the season. The snowboarding team is thrilled to be representing the school at OFSAA this year, and we heartily wish them the very best of luck. Go Eagles!

Elmwood’s talented troupe chosen to perform in Scotland next summer.
Elmwood Theatre, under the direction of Director of Theatre, Angela Boychuk, has been selected to perform in the world’s largest and most prestigious arts festival—the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Theatre Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Each August, Edinburgh becomes the most magical and exciting place on earth as performing artists from all over the world come to Scotland to take part in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The whole city becomes a stage and visitors can view performances everywhere—from playgrounds to conference rooms to city parks to churches. The Fringe Festival includes over 1800 different performances of music, theatre, dance and comedy during its three week run.
Elmwood’s Dramatic Arts Program, long recognized for its high calibre productions, was nominated to participate as part of the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF) 2013 program. The AHSTF Board of Advisors reviews all completed applications and identifies the top high schools based on their most recent bodies of work, awards, community involvements, philosophies and recommendations.
As a result of this rigorous application process, Elmwood Theatre’s 2013 production was chosen for a showcase spot at the AHSTF venue in Edinburgh.
Congratulations to Mrs. Boychuk and the cast and crew of Elmwood Theatre. Break a leg!
