Two Elmwood Grade 11 Students Headed to US Universities This Summer

Thursday April 21

Francesca Schembri and Emma Graham, members of Elmwood’s Class of 2012, will both be spending part of their summer break at prestigious universities in the United States.

Francesca was accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Women's Technology Program in Mechanical Engineering, one of the top summer engineering programs for high school students in the world. Only 20 Grade 11 girls were accepted out of the 250 who applied. She will take daily engineering classes taught by MIT female graduate students, participate in a Rube Goldberg challenge, visit labs and hear from special guest lecturers.

Emma is one of only two international students accepted into the Discovery to Cure High School Internship Program at Yale University. Dr. Gil Mor, M.D., PhD of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences created the program in order to promote interest in the science and medical fields. She will spend six weeks working on a research project in a laboratory together with a mentor scientist and will then present her data and conclusions to family members, teachers, investigators and departmental staff.

Headmistress Cheryl Boughton said, “Over 50% of Elmwood graduates go on to study math, science or engineering in university. Francesca and Emma are following in this tradition and we are incredibly proud of them. We wish them all the best at MIT and Yale this summer.”
