Elmwood Students Use Technology to Tell Hero Stories
Tuesday March 09Led by teacher Jessica Grass, Elmwood’s Grade 10 Canadian History class participated in an educational pilot program and competition with AnswerTheCall.ca, producing video podcasts about Canada's heroes. The students created the video portions for a number of Nick Vandergragt's Answer the Call audio stories. With Vandergragt’s remarkable stories as a starting point, the girls used their artistic expression, creativity and new media skills to bring the podcasts to life visually.
The works range from complex productions to simplistic, heartfelt drawings penciled into a storyboard. Guy Paquette, a new media instructor working with Vandergragt, initiated the project. "Kids use technology and they are empowered by it. This project puts the learning in their hands and the students are eager to research the subject matter to develop the artistic content for their videos. Kids actually want to watch these because the stories are retold in a style that is meaningful to them and through a medium that they enjoy using."
Emily Featherstone's animated story about Arthur Richardson was awarded with the top prize for her creativity, production values and unique spin on the project.
