Elmwood students “Sharing the Planet” at Exhibition 2009
Wednesday May 13Ottawa, May 13, 2009 – During the first week of May, Elmwood’s Junior School was filled with excitement and anticipation as we celebrated Exhibition 2009. The Primary Years Programme Exhibition represents the culminating Unit of Inquiry for the PYP, and it is one of the most important events of the year for an International Baccalaureate school. Each year, Exhibition provides our Grade 5 students with the opportunity to synthesize the elements of the PYP and share them with the entire school community.
Using the theme of “Sharing the Planet” as their starting point, the students conducted in-depth, collaborative research into the impact of humans on animals and their habitats. The six-week process was rigorous and exacting, requiring the students to explore multiple sources and perspectives. Each student was paired with a faculty mentor, who helped to guide the research process. On May 6 and 7, the Grade 5 students presented their Exhibition in a celebration with the entire Elmwood community. Students, teachers, parents and other special guests came to view their PowerPoints, movies, photo stories, display boards, pamphlets, songs and creative writing. The CBC sent a camera crew, and some of the Exhibition was shown on the evening news. Exhibition 2009 was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our Grade 5 students as they graduate to the Middle Years Programme in September 2009.
