Elmwood School Head Girl Accepted to Yale

Friday January 21

Juliet Caragianis only Canadian girl to land a coveted spot on Yale’s rowing team

Elmwood School’s Head Girl, Juliet Caragianis, has been admitted to Yale University. She will be the only Canadian woman on the prestigious school’s rowing team. On average, only 70 Canadians are accepted into Yale for undergraduate studies each year. Fewer still have the academic record to apply and be accepted through the early admissions process. International students comprise 10 percent of Yale’s enrolment.

“We are so proud of Juliet and what she has accomplished with her academic and athletic career,” said Cheryl Boughton, Headmistress at Elmwood School. “Juliet has not only maintained a 90 percent average and is pursuing the full IB Diploma, but she has also been a strong member of our rowing, basketball, rugby and volleyball teams, and an incredibly effective student leader.”

Elmwood School is one of the few in Canada to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and High School Diploma. The IB is one of the most highly acclaimed approaches to education in the world, providing children with outstanding preparation for personal and academic achievement in the 21st century. The IB academic programme teaches the essential developmental skills of critical thinking, intellectual inquisitiveness and interpretation, and encourages students to be compassionate engaged global citizens. In a world where students face increasing competition for universities and jobs, the IB gives them the edge.

“Elmwood School has a proven track record of outstanding graduate success. 100% of our 2010 graduates were accepted into their first choice university, 95% to the program of their choice,” said Ms. Boughton. “In addition to Juliet, students from the Class of 2011 have already been accepted to other American universities, including Smith College—one of the largest and most selective women’s liberal arts colleges in the United States—and top-ranked Northeastern University in Boston.”

The Elmwood Eagles rowing team, coached by Derek Howe and Dana Borschewski, has only been competing for one year, but has already been successful at regattas in Canada and the US.

“At 6’1”, Juliet has been an important member of the team, helping establish the Eagles’ crew as a new competitive force in the National Capital region,” said Coach Howe. “Juliet has all the key attributes, height, dedication and commitment, to be a successful collegiate rower at the highest levels. Yale will provide a wonderful opportunity for Juliet to pursue her academic and athletic endeavors.”

Juliet plans to pursue the Economics and Mathematics major at Yale in the fall.
