Elmwood one of top 5 vegetarian-friendly schools in Canada

Thursday March 19

Ottawa, March 19, 2009 – Elmwood School has made the list of the Top Five Most Vegetarian-Friendly High Schools in Canada. The school was selected by peta2, the world's largest youth animal rights organization, following extensive research into the menus of public high schools nationwide. Five public schools and five private schools in the U.S. were also chosen.

Under the leadership of Head of School Cheryl Boughton, Elmwood students can choose from an array of delicious vegetarian selections, including tofu nuggets, veggie quesadillas, stuffed eggplant, and vegetables and chickpeas with whole-wheat pasta.

"We congratulate Elmwood School for meeting students' growing hunger for healthy, delicious, and humane vegetarian food," says peta2 Assistant Director Dan Shannon. "Elmwood has shown that keeping fit, trim, and healthy—and helping animals and the environment at the same time—has never been easier."

Elmwood's School Nurse, Frances Marchand, and Grade 12 student Shilpa G. were invited to speak about the award on Ottawa's "A Morning" television program. They discussed Elmwood's ongoing efforts to support and encourage healthy lifestyles for students.
