Elmwood Makes More Than Fair Showing at Science Fair

Tuesday April 05

A number of Elmwood Middle and Senior students participated in the Ottawa Regional Science Fair (ORSF), held April 2 at Carleton University. The ORSF is a volunteer organization that encourages students in the Ottawa-Carleton Region, from grades 7 to 12, to research, develop, and present projects in the fields of science and engineering. Two of our students won medals for their exemplary work.

Grade 11 student Emma Graham won the silver medal in the Health, Engineering, Computing, Physical and Mathematical Sciences – Senior division for her project on “Interaction among P53, BRCA1 and estradiol as risk factors for breast cancer.” Emma will also be one of 20 Canadian students competing in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles this May. We wish her the best in this international competition.

Tannya Cai, Grade 10, was awarded the bronze medal in the Life Sciences – Intermediate division for the “Application of Esterification in Chemotherapy.”

Three Grade 7 girls also received Honourable Mention for their projects. In the Health Sciences – Junior division, Chloe Lucas presented “Rise to the Challenge,” and in the Earth and Environmental Science – Junior division Honourable Mention went to Victoria Bolitho for the “2011 Laundry Olympics” and Meera Singla for “Better Insulation…Better Planet.”

Congratulations to all of our Elmwood scientists!
