Sunday June 07Ottawa, June 7, 2009 – Grade 12 student Noushig Kadian received one of the highest honours in Ottawa's high school arts scene as she was awarded Best Comic Actress in a Play at the Cappies Gala held at the National Arts Centre.
Ms. Kadian received the award for her portrayal of characters Blind Pugh (Act 1) and Ben Gunn (Act 2) in Treasure Island, a new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale by British playwright Phil Willmott.
Two other Elmwood actresses were in the running for Cappies; Emily Kitagawa (Grade 12) and Allie Hodgson (Grade 11) were nominated for Best Ensemble in a Play for their performances as Lady Trewlaney and Miss Livesy.
About Elmwood Theatre
Elmwood Theatre sets out to provide young actors with the practical and artistic experience of mounting a full-fledged production, as well as to instill in them a confidence in their own ability to express themselves, and a life-long passion for the arts.
Every year Elmwood Theatre involves up to fifty students on-stage and behind the scenes, featuring both International and Canadian scripts. The plays are carefully selected, always with the goal that the students, in the end, will take ownership of their own artistic endeavors.
Over the years students have acquired a practical, theoretical and historical knowledge of international traditions and ideas related to theatre. Some of these have included the effectiveness and beauty of Indonesian Shadow Puppetry; the plight of children caught in situations of war and poverty, or suffering from physical disability or abuse, as well as the courage, imagination and heroism of women who seek to enrich their lives by means of their own strengths and resources.
