“Elmwood inspired me to be an engaged and curious person who isn’t afraid to take on new challenges,” she says. “Most importantly, Elmwood taught me to seek balance in all that I do... It is this balance that helps me be a good nurse to my patients, an engaged member of my community, and a happy person.”
Samara Yearbook
Beginning in 1923, Elmwood’s students and faculty have invested untold energy and pride into the production of the school’s yearbook, Samara. While in the past, Elmwood’s favourite publication was typed, cut out, taped by hand and copied, technological advancements over the past century have dramatically changed the look—but not the spirit—of the beloved Samara. Today, our yearbook begins as a series of blank “spreads” or facing pages all laid out online on our publisher’s website. These spreads are set on a grid, and each one must be templated and filled in electronically by a small but dedicated team. Digital photography, colour, typefaces and new layout design software have allowed for different expressions of creativity. Nevertheless, Samara still includes community members, student art and writing, unique submissions, questions, jokes, and the iconic tributes to each House: Fry, Keller, Nightingale and Wilson.
Some customs remain while others evolve, yet Samara remains a place where community, traditions, voices and people express themselves and are heard. Each September, when the latest edition of Samara arrives and is distributed, there is much rejoicing, laughing, reminiscing and remembering—just as Elmwood students have done for decades.
