What Makes Kindergarten at Elmwood Unique?

All-girls Environment

Elmwood’s Kindergarten programme is uniquely designed for the educational, emotional and social needs of four- and five-year-old girls. Elmwood creates many exciting learning opportunities within a safe and nurturing environment. An all-girls’ setting fosters high levels of self-esteem and increased student achievement through a programme that is tailored precisely to meet the learning needs of girls. Elmwood offers myriad opportunities for our students to excel beyond expectations.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme

Elmwood is an IB World School offering the IB Programme at all three levels, starting in Junior Kindergarten with the Primary Years Programme (PYP). We combine the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines for Kindergarten with the IB’s dynamic curriculum framework. Based on research into best practices around the world, the IB’s inquiry-based approach nurtures a love of learning and critical thinking, beginning with our youngest students. The IB emphasizes, through its learner profile, the development of the whole student—physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. Child-centred Learning

Our Kindergarten classes balance a rich, exciting, academic environment with creative and purposeful play, through which young girls construct their knowledge of the world around them. Our child-centred classrooms are led by skilled, dedicated teachers who are experts in early childhood education, guiding and developing each child’s individual approach to learning. Through experiential learning and imaginative play, Elmwood students engage in early literacy activities and tackle mathematical problems using a variety of strategies. It is here that each girl establishes a foundation for lifelong learning—and lifelong friendships.

State-of-the-Art Facilities and Specialist Teachers

Our Kindergarten classrooms combine gorgeous facilities with a warm, nurturing environment, bringing students and teachers together in the joy of discovery. The rooms are equipped with high-quality learning materials. Language and Math concepts are taught through interactive, hands-on lessons. Academic development is balanced with time for free-choice activities and outdoor play, as we believe that these opportunities provide valuable learning experiences and skill development. Our youngest students also benefit from access to our smart board equipped computer lab. Daily French lessons combine music, songs, and drama to foster an early love of language. Our Kindergarten programme is further enriched by weekly music, computer and library classes, led by specialist teachers.

Community Interaction

The development of the whole girl continues outside of the classroom as well. Elmwood provides a rich variety of co-curricular activities and experiences, including field trips, assemblies and clubs. As valued members of the Elmwood family, our Kindergarten girls also enjoy daily interaction with older students throughout the school. From Kindergarten through to Grade 12, our school is known for its passionate commitment to community service—locally, nationally and internationally. Our four- and five-year-olds learn that their actions can make a positive difference to the world around them.

Home/School Partnership

At Elmwood, parents are key partners in their daughter’s education. Parental involvement is valued and encouraged and home-school communication is constant.  Before- and after-school care is also available.
