Message from the Headmistress

Cheryl BoughtonWhat we have here at Elmwood is something very unique.

When you walk through the halls of the school you notice the extraordinary energy, enthusiasm and purpose that our students possess. This is a place where girls feel safe and secure, a place where girls can find their voice, and a place where girls dare to dream big.

Students are supported, encouraged and inspired, whatever their interests and ambitions. Whether they’re fascinated by science and engineering, or art and drama, we encourage them to explore the exciting possibilities that lie ahead of them. Our experienced faculty have the subject-specialist knowledge needed to guide our students on their educational journey. We know that the best way to develop strong, resilient girls is to allow them to explore, create, experiment, grow, achieve, and express themselves in a safe, positive and encouraging environment.

But an Elmwood School education stretches far beyond the classroom. We encourage girls to be physically active by giving them opportunities to try something different. Through activities such as dog sledding in Algonquin Park or a winter fun day for Middle School our girls develop the self-esteem, decision making and critical thinking skills they need to successfully navigate their future. It is through these key experiences that Elmwood girls see themselves as leaders.

Furthermore, when girls graduate from Elmwood, they are fully equipped to take on life’s challenges. All Elmwood students take at least one math or science credit in Grade 12 and the vast majority take all that are offered. 50% of our graduates go on to study science, math or engineering at university and a significant number continue their studies at the graduate level. This is impressive considering that although women now account for a significant majority of undergraduate students at Canadian universities, female enrolment in engineering, math and science faculties has never exceeded 20%.

It is all well and good for me to tell you what an Elmwood education means to our students. It is another thing all together to see the school in action yourself. Visit us on one of our Explore Elmwood days or simply book an individual tour. Meet our confident, courageous and compassionate girls and see why they feel so ready to embrace the challenges that lie ahead.

I look forward to meeting you.

Cheryl Boughton,
Headmistress
